History of Bujinkan

WHAT IS A NINJA?

Nin-ja literally translates from the Japanese characters "blade at heart". No matter what the odds, even with the blade at the heart, the Ninja will overcome. Today a Ninja is one who practices "Ninjutsu" Ninja skills, or sublimely "Ninpo", the laws of universal truth and enlightenment, which guarantee victory - the art of winning.

WHEN DID NINPO START?

Some 900 years and 34 generations to the first Soke (grandmaster) for which our ryu is named - Daisuke Togakure. Before that, Ninpo emerges from legend as a distillation of shugeiija yarnabushi (mountain warrior mystics), Chinese monks and fugitive generals

WHY IS NINPO DIFFERENT

Ninpo is older than other martial arts such as Karate and Judo, and has maintained its warrior heritage. There are no stylised forms, or tournaments for competition or promotion, only the most efficient combat survival methods ever devised. Unlike styles emphasising intricate manoeuvres or animal like actions, Ninpo, like Aikdo uses relaxed and natural movement and distance to overcome speed and power. Movement is refined for grace and naturalness in all actions until power results from mere movement, evasiveness, from simple adjustment of position. Unlike Aikido, Ninpo is not limited to circular movements, but incorporates strikes, punches, kicks, throws, locks, rolls and flips.

Hatsumi Sensei

Hatsumi Sensei is the Soke (grandmaster) of the International Bujinkan Dojo based in Nada City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. He holds the title Soke for nine traditional ryuha (martial art schools). These ryuha are continuously studied and practised by Bujinkan Dojo throughout the world. Hatsumi Sensei teaches on a regular basis in Tokyo, at the Tokyo Ayase Budokan.

The Bujinkan Dojo is true Budo (way of the warrior). We train in martial arts, not in martial sports, this is an art, the feeling is distinctly different. The feeling is captured by the individual through the beauty of the body and the spirit moving in harmony together. There is no competition involved. The feeling received is the connection between the practice of the art and the individual, just as if one was to walk into a museum and view a painting. No trophy can be attached to it. Hatsumi Sensei has made it clear; if the Bujinkan Dojo ever involves itself in competition, we will no longer be a martial art. We will lose the true feeling and purpose of Budo
